Specialized parenting for difficult behavior - A 12-session group using principles from evidence-based parent management approaches
|
|
It’s no secret that some children and teens are just more difficult to parent. This can be due to various reasons, such as willful temperament, emotional difficulties, or difficult family situations, to name a few. Sometimes, we, as parents, just need to be more planful in the ways we approach their behavior. In this parenting group, we will focus on specific parenting techniques and spend time applying these techniques to each individual situation. The goal will be for parents to feel more confident in their abilities to prevent and manage difficult behaviors, as well as ultimately see behavior change in their children and teens.

Who would benefit from Specialized Parenting?
Parents who have one or more children and/or teens with difficult behavior such as defiance, tantrums, and refusal would likely benefit from this group.
What will a parent gain from this group?
Parents of children with difficult behavior often feel as though they have “tried everything,” and they probably HAVE tried lots of different techniques to attempt to manage their child’s problem behavior. There were likely some successes, but perhaps not enough change occurred. This group will help parents perfect the skills they may already have and use, as well as build additional skills in managing problematic behavior using an evidence-based approach. Some of the parenting techniques that will be discussed include positive reinforcement systems, attending and planned ignoring, consequences and contingencies, and compromising. Parents will apply skills taught during sessions and discuss how it went. The goals will be for parents to learn new parenting skills, feel more confident in their ability to handle problematic behaviors, and ultimately see behavior change in their children as a result!
Participants: One parent must attend all sessions; if there is another parent he/she is encouraged to attend, but this is not required. It is assumed that the attending parent will share all of the information with the parent who is unable to attend. The child does not attend treatment sessions.
Group size: 5-7
Sessions: 12 weeks
Time: Wednesdays 5-6:15pm
Start Date: March 7, 2018
