What is Insomnia?
Insomnia is a Sleep-Wake Disorder in which an individual is dissatisfied with his/her sleep quality or quantity due to difficulty falling asleep and/or difficulty staying asleep. This disturbance causes significant distress or impairments in important areas of daily functioning (i.e., work, school, social, behavioral).
What is Hypersomnolence Disorder (Hypersomnia)?
Hypersomnolence Disorder (Hypersomnia) is a Sleep-Wake Disorder in which an individual experience extreme sleepiness regardless of having a sleep period of at least 7 hours. Individuals with Hypersomnolence Disorder experience recurrent episodes of sleep within the same day, an unrefreshing sleep episode of 9 hours or more, and/or difficulty being alert after a sudden awakening.
Treatment
Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is found to be the most effective treatment for insomnia. Treatment includes assessment of sleep behaviors and related history, monitoring of sleep habits, alteration of sleep habits and environmental interference, implementation of an individually-tailored sleep schedule based on current sleep patterns, and addressing disruptive beliefs about sleep.
